Each year 3-5 salient themes engaging the immediate attention of and relevant to the mountains and hills are identified for threadbare discussion and debate. Conclusions and recommendations emerging from this exercise would be pursued by IMI subsequently.
It provides a functional discussion platform for mountain states with determination to follow up what gets collectively agreed upon.
Each of these Summits have been characterized by diverse discussions, debates and exchanges. They have also produced specific policy briefings and recommendations, which are helping the dialogue on development practices and policies for the mountain states. The thematic focus of previous SMDSs held under the aegis of IMI were:
Constituting a working group-4 on Skill Development and Entrepreneurship in the mountain region by NITI Aayog of which IMI is a member
Collaborating with MoEF&CC through NMHS on Understanding Mountain Peoples’ Approach and practices to combating Climate Change in the IHR: Research to Renewal & Reforms
Instituting a Commission on glaciers for the Himalayan States
Facilitating the Conclave of Himalayan States to discuss priorities of IHR in the 15th Finance Commission as a direct outcome of SMDS VII.
